When a prosecutor last week described a 13 year-old female victim of sex abuse as "predatory", a wave of lawyers, academics and feminists quite rightly took to the world wide web to explain, calmly and robustly, why that comment was just plain wrong, on so many levels. A Young girls cannot consent to their own abuse. B Underage girls are simply not 'immoral', waiting to seduce and entrap men.

Welcome to today's reminder that it's different for girls. A picture has been circulating on Twitter and Facebook since last night, reportedly taken at Eminem's Slane Castle gig yesterday. It shows a cluster of men looking at a young man and a young woman. Him: shirt off, shorts down, cock out, arms held high, beaming with triumph. Her: fully clothed, kneeling, sucking. It's a grotty scene, and so are the reactions to it, because while there are two people at it in the picture, only one of them has been the focus for the attendant flack.

For Stadtmiller, to be a slut is, by definition, to play a slut: to act out a character in order to attract attention and love. A sexual-assault survivor—at fifteen, she was raped by a distant relative—Stadtmiller learned early on how to turn her vulnerability into what she assured herself was a strength. I did that. Truck drivers are buying sex from Aboriginal girls under 16 in several states, an Australian Crime Commission investigation has revealed. The use of contraceptive implants among indigenous girls - known as "slut sticks" - has also found to be widespread, particularly among year-olds, "making them a target of sexual attention". In May, an ACC taskforce visited communities across Australia, including the Northern Territory as part of the federal intervention to curb child sex abuse. The taskforce found convicted child sex offenders working with children; children as young as seven experimenting with sex toys; and children trading sex for petrol and food.
