ASIAN hornets have been spotted in the UK and the invasive species has once again sparked fears for our native bee population. Here's what we know. Asian hornets, which have the Latin name Vespa velutina, are large insects that prey on smaller creatures, especially bees. Experts are worried the hornets could have a devastating impact on Britain's already dwindling honey bee population. Their bodies are dark brown or black, and bordered with a yellow band, while they have one band across the abdomen. Asian hornets arrived in France inside Chinese pot plants in and are increasingly common across the Channel.

Britain faces a summer invasion by Asian super ants known to chomp their way through electrical cables and spark fires. Pest controllers have discovered a rare colony of a million of the insects, also known as fire ants, on two streets in Eastbourne, Sussex. Paul Bates of Cleankill Pest Control, which is dealing with the infestation, said it was the biggest colony he had seen. The ants tend to gather around electricity cables or junction boxes and have been known to chew through cables causing fires in homes. They are hard to kill because they form huge colonies consisting of tens of thousands of inter-connected ants, and have become resistant to treatments.
