Riding in the correct position on the road is important for safety and helps traffic flow freely. In Great Britain, you should normally keep to the left side of the road and ride in the centre of the traffic lane. You should ride in a position that allows you to be seen by traffic ahead, and be seen in the mirror of any vehicle in front of you. If the traffic coming towards you needs room to pass obstructions such as parked cars, move over to the left. Avoid riding in the centre of the road because you might. Keep scanning the road ahead of you to see when you might need to change your position in the road, such as when there are roadworks, inspection covers or oil spills.
All new riders are limited to riding cc machines with L-plates. Anyone wishing to ride a cc with L-plates must be at least Learners wishing to get a full licence have to take a Part 1 test which involves a figure of eight in a box, a slow ride and a sort of junction and one or two other manoeuvres. This test was conducted by authorised instructors and began a process that started to tie in the Department for Transport that was later to become the DSA to the motorcycle training industry.
